UDC Men’s Soccer Falls to Mercy College 3-0
Dobbs Ferry, NY – The UDC Men's Soccer Team traveled to Dobbs Ferry, to take on Mercy College. The second game in 3 days proved to be too much for the Firebirds, as the Mavericks pulled out a commanding 3-0 win. Mercy improves to 5-1-1 with the win, while UDC drops to 4-3-1.
Rain began to pour just seconds into the match but both teams were determined to fight through the difficult conditions. The Mavericks were paced by a hat trick from junior forward William Koki. Mercy got on the scoreboard in the 36th minute as Koki found the back of the net on a pass from Lamine Seck. The Mavericks held the one-goal advantage through halftime. The Firebirds pushed hard to tie the game, but were unable to capitalize.
The Mavericks scored a second goal in the 72nd minute, when Tafari Newman sent a long clear upfield. The Firebirds' freshman goalkeeper, Alex Vert (Rockville, MD - Urbana HS), stepped out to clear the ball himself but misjudged it, allowing it to bounce over his head for the onrushing Koki to control and slip into the empty net.
Still not finished, Koki netted an insurance strike just five minutes later for the hat trick.
The Firebirds don't have much time to lament the loss, as they play a third game this week. Fortunately the Firebirds are at home this time, taking on Concord on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
