September 8, 2011
Shippensburg, PA – The UDC Men''s Soccer team downs Goldey Beacom College 1 – 0 in Shippensburg, PA on a goal from Freshman Midfielder Robel Davis (Decatur, GA - Southwest Dekalb HS). The win was the first of the season for the Firebirds and the first under new Head Coach Matt Thompson. With the win the Firebirds move to 1-0 while the Lightning fall to 0-1.
The Firebirds out shot the Lightning 17 – 11 throughout the course of the game, and played very solid on the defensive front holding Goldey Beacom scoreless for the entire game. Several Firebirds turned in performances of note on the day. Junior Midfielder and Captain Mario Benegas (Frederick, MD – Urbana HS) had the only assist of the game, sending a cross to Freshman Midfielder Robel Davis. In scoring the game winner, Davis registered his first collegiate goal of his career. Freshman Defender Tom Ryan (Rugby England, Bilton School) and Senior Defender Nana Banfo (Upper Marlboro, MD/ El Salvador – Urbana HS) lead the Firebirds in a stout defensive effort, limiting the Lightning to only 11 shots on the day.
Head Coach Matt Thompson had this to say about the Firebirds first game of the year, "I am pleased with the effort. We created more scoring chances than we were able to capitalize on, but the chances were there which is a good sign. Our back four played very well, and our defense kept us in it. All in all, I am satisfied with the win, but we can play better, and we will need to, with the tough games we have ahead on our schedule. It''s a good way to start off the season though for sure."
The Firebirds stay in Pennsylvania through the weekend and take on Felician on Sunday, September 4th at 3:00 pm.
