UDC Men's Soccer Ties Shepherd in Defensive Battle, 0-0 in 2 OT
Washington, DC - The University of the District of Columbia Men's Soccer team tied the Shepherd University Rams this afternoon at home, 0-0, in a hard fought, defensive contest. The Firebirds, who did not get too many quality chances on offense, now stand at 2-0-1 in the early part of the season.
Shepherd outshot UDC 21 to 7, but not many shots from either team got particularly close to entering the net. The exception was when Sophomore Firebird goalie, Kyle Heatherington (Collingwood Ontario, Canada - Collingwood Collegiate Institute ) made a leaping, extended save toward the end of the 1st overtime that thwarted a potential Ram goal. Heatherington had 8 saves on the day. Shepherd goalie, Edgar Zuniga-Lopez, had two saves on the day.
Overall, it was a tightly played, physical battle. Many attempts to get into scoring position were stopped quickly and the offensive chances were in short supply.
UDC Head Coach Matt Thompson had this to say about the low scoring affair, "There were many positives. We kept a clean sheet [no goals conceded], and thats a good thing. We defended well from set pieces which shows that practice is paying off. Now we just need to score."
The UDC Firebirds will again take to their home pitch right away - Thursday, September 15 at 4pm vs. Chestnut Hill College.
