BALTIMORE-UMBC senior forward Pete Caringi III(Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) scored twice in the first 24 minutes of play, leading the Retrievers to a 3-1 victory over Seattle U. in the season opener for both squads in the Spring Hill Suites Arundel Mills BWI Kick-Off Classic.

Senior midfielder Kadeem Dacres (Rosedale, N.Y.) added a pair of assists and junior midfielder Mamadou Kansaye (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) tallied an insurance marker in the 84^th minute.

UMBC is now 10-0-1 in its last 11 home openers and extended its unbeaten streak to ten games dating back to 2012.

 The game drew a record season- opening crowd of 2,113 at Retriever Soccer Park.

The Retrievers struck quickly on their first shot of the evening just before the ten-minute mark. Junior midfielderGeaton Caltabiano (Lothian, Md./Mt. St. Joseph) sent a long pass down the right side, where classmate Stephen Ho (North Potomac, Md./Wooton) broke directly to the goal. Ho could have chipped  keeper Jake Feener, but slid a pass to his left where a charging Caringi knocked the pass into an unguarded goal from 12 yards out.

Caltabiano initiated UMBC’s second score exactly 24 minutes into the contest. He slotted a ball through to the left side, where Dacres challenged and beat his defender, but slid a pass to the right post , where Caringi poked it past Feener from four yards out.

UMBC appeared to be control, but Seattle cut the deficit in half in the 38’ when a UMBC attempted clear deflected off a teammate and caromed into the box. Redhawk junior senior forward Miguel Gonzalez gained control on the right edge and beat UMBC senior goalkeeperPhil Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) from close range.

The goal snapped a scoreless streak that UMBC had run up to 589 minutes, dating back six games to Oct. 24, 2012.

The game remained at 2-1 at halftime and until late in the proceedings, when Kansaye and Dacres worked a give and go, and Kansaye chipped the return pass beyond Feener 10 yards out to seal the victory.

UMBC outshot Seattle U., 20-7, with Caringi accounting for nine shots. Feener made seven saves for the visitors, while Saunders only had to stop a single attempt to gain the victory.
