JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The UMBC women’s soccer team exploded for five goals against non-conference Saint Peter’s for its first victory of the season and the first since Sept. 26, 2010 on Saturday evening at Jaroschak Field. Freshman forward Bria Bass (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and freshman midfielder Preslie Quaranta (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) each accounted for two goals in the win.

“I am very excited for our team today,” head coach Leslie Wray said. “The team deserved this win and worked hard to get it. I am very proud of the effort that everyone gave. This was a team effort and a good team win.”

The Retrievers improve to 1-3-1 on the year, while the Peacocks move to 1-4.

Bass wasted little time putting UMBC out in front, scoring 17:36 into the contest, blasting in her first collegiate goal off a pass into the box from classmate Alexa Quaranta (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall). The Springfield, Va., native jumped back on the board 7:10 later, following a clearing pass from freshman back Amira Walcott (Beltsville, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt), giving the Retrievers a 2-0 advantage.

In the second half, twins Alexa Quaranta and Preslie Quaranta accounted for all three of UMBC’s goals. Alexa chipped in her second goal of the season in the 67th minute, dribbling in and netting a shot from 18 yards out. Preslie scored two straight, each unassisted, to end the contest.

Each team tallied 14 shots in the match, with the Retrievers placing 11 on goal.

UMBC goalkeeper Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) picked up six saves and combined with freshman keeper Jen Nance (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) for the Retrievers second shutout of the season.

UMBC returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 2 when it travels to Long Island to take on the Blackbirds. Live stats and video can be found on www.umbcretrievers.com.
