UMBC's Streilein Scores With Five Seconds Remaining as Retrievers Play Navy to 1-1 Draw
Baltimore—UMBC (2-0-2) senior defender Andy Streilein (Rockville, Md./Wootton) scored a stunning goal with five seconds left in regulation and the Retrievers tied visiting Navy (1-2-2), 1-1, before 1,147 at Retriever Soccer Park.
Navy, which took a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute, appeared on its way to victory after clearing away a UMBC corner kick with 24 seconds remaining. But Retriever goalkeeper Dan Louisignau, 75 yards away from his goal line, chipped the ball deep into the box. Streilein headed it wide left of the goal, but senior forward Kingsley Onwuka (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood/CCBC-Essex) was able to keep it in play, tapping it back, where a hustling Streilein back-heeled it in from three yards out.
The goal was Streilein’s first since the 2009 campaign and his sixth career score.
After the teams combined for seven first-half shots, the Retrievers rang up 19 and the Mids countered with 17 in the final 65 minutes. Both netminders were brilliant- Louisignau posted nine saves for the second consecutive game, while Navy sophomore goalie Adam Dupere was severely tested down the stretch and was credited with 11 stops.
Dupere stopped UMBC sophomore forward Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) with a diving save in the 93rd minute, then foiled senior midfielder Andrew Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh) on a header in the 105th minute. Bulls got the rebound, but his follow attempt sailed over the net from six yards out.
Navy sophomore forward Alex Wilson broke the scoreless tie with a wicked, rising 19-yard shot that Louisignau got a piece of. It was the first goal that the Retrievers had allowed in 2011, and broke a scoreless streak of 495 minutes dating back to the 2010 campaign.
UMBC outshot Navy, 23-20, for the game and took 10 corners to seven for the visitors.
The Retrievers extended their unbeaten streak to 13 games (9-0-4) and their September home record to 15-0-2 since 2007.
UMBC completes its six-game homestand when they host second-ranked Maryland on Tuesday evening at Retriever Soccer Park.
