UMKC Beats Leathernecks for its Third-Straight Win
(Kansas City, Mo.) – Sunday afternoon, the UMKC women’s soccer team extended their two-game winning streak to three with a 2-1 victory over the Western Illinois Leathernecks.
With this win, the ‘Roos (4-5-3) are 2-0 in Summit League play for the first time in school history. As forWestern Illinois(6-4), they drop their second-straight in league play.
In the first half, the Leathernecks got off to a quick start with an unassisted score by junior midfielder/forward Miranda Graham in the sixth minute.
Later in the first, UMKC answered with an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Ashley Gann in the 40th minute to tie the game.
In the second half, the sophomore tandem of Gann and forward Taylor Bare teamed up to put the ‘Roos ahead 2-1 when Gann fed Bare for the go ahead score. With that score, Bare extended her team-leading goal mark to six.
As the half continued, UMKC’s defense was stellar along with the help of junior keeper Jami Finnell keeping the Leathernecks scoreless in the second half. Finnell finished the game with five saves on the day as the ‘Roos held onto win, 2-1.
Up next for UMKC, they will hit the road for a two-game road swing beginning with IPFW on Friday and thenOaklandon Sunday.
