UMKC men defeat Centenary

October 25, 2009
Kansas City, Mo. -- The UMKC(m) men's soccer team opened its three-game home stand with a dominating 4-1 victory over Centenary on Saturday afternoon at Durwood Soccer Stadium & Recreational Field.  Senior Bryan Perez and sophomore David Sarabia both registered three points apiece in the match and Perez became the sole school record holder for career points.

In a blink of an eye, UMKC jumped out to the early 1-0 lead with a goal at the 1:50 mark.  Perez fed a through ball to Sarabia, who then proceded to send the ball into the back of the net past Centenary's Rennie Walker.  The strike was Sarabia's sixth goal of the season.

Midway through the half, the 'Roos extended their lead courtesy of John Bayron Sosa's first goal of the season.  Sarabia was on the attack on the right side of the six yard box when he fed Sosa, who was sitting by himself in the middle of the box.  Sosa then scored on an easy tap-in goal to put UMKC up 2-0 at the 24:42 mark.

Centenary stepped up its offensive pressure in the second half and it nearly resulted in a goal.  The Gents actually found the back of the net in the 60th minute, but the goal was called off due to an offsides call.

The 'Roos then put the game out of reach when they added their third and fourth goals of the game in the 76th and 78th minutes.  Perez put the squad up 3-0 with his unassisted strike off of a free kick from 25-yards out before freshman Tom Black scored an unassisted goal at the 78:07 mark when he beat CC goalkeeper Robbie Ramirez in a one-on-one situation.  Ramirez dove to the right in his attempt to block the shot before Black scored on an easy tap-in for his second strike of the season.

Centenary avoided the shutout with a goal at the 79:04 mark.  Marcos Rodriguez netted the goal after sending his shot into the upper left corner of the net past an extended Ken Cooper.

Cooper finished the game with six saves to register his fifth win of the season.

UMKC (5-7-2, 2-0-2) will return to action on Tuesday night when it hosts Baker at DSSRF.  The game, which will be televised on Metro Sports, is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
