UNC battles bad weather in CU loss
DENVER, Colo. -- Two weather delays stalled Northern Colorado's eventual loss to Colorado during the opening Colorado Cup match at CIBER Field.
The final score, 3-0, seemed like double-déjà vu as the Buffaloes have defeated the Bears with the same final in the two previous Colorado Cup meetings. UNC is now 0-8 all-time against CU.
After early corner kicks from the Buffaloes, junior Ambree Bellin struck first in the shot on goal column. CU's Annie Brunner saved the shot, one of three shots on goal saved.
The first goal scored on the night was by UNC, but on the wrong net. The Bears were scrambling to get the ball out of the goal area when a defender accidently knocked the ball into the net.
Just over two minutes later, junior Juliana Grover headed a ball to towards the Buffaloes' net to make up for the Bears error. Brunner again stood in the way while saving the shot.
Freshman Brie Hooks scored the second Buffaloes goal on the night over 33 minutes into the match. Two minutes later lightning entered the area and delayed action that kept both teams off the field for about an hour.
The Bears and Buffaloes continued for nine minutes following the delay into halftime. Even halftime, though, couldn't stop the lightning and rain, delaying the game for a second time with three minutes left in the break.
2012 Big Sky Goalkeeper of the Year Natalie D'Adamio showed her talents over the next 25 minutes of play, saving three of her five shots of the night. During that span the Bears were only able to get off one shot, coming from Bellin's corner kick.
The Buffaloes' Hook scored the second goal of her first collegiate match 78 minutes in. The Bears offense wasn't able to muster a strong push towards the goal for the rest of the match.
The Bears finished with five shots, three on goal. The Buffaloes finished with 16, eight coming on goal. D'Adamio saved five shots compared to Brunner's three. CU totaled seven corner kicks, five more than UNC.
Northern Colorado plays the final match of the Colorado Cup on Sunday. The Bears and Pioneers of Denver will meet at 12 p.m. in Boulder, Colo., at Prentup Field.
