UNCG Battles Elon To A 0-0 Tie on the Road
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women’s soccer battled the Elon Phoenix (1-0-1) to a 0-0 tie Sunday night at Rudd Field. The Spartans went 1-0-1 in the first weekend of the 2018 season after defeating Gardner-Webb 2-1 at home Friday.
“A very physical and fast game, I think both teams played well tonight,” said head coach Michael Coll. “It was really good for us to be tested on the road against a good team. We showed our strength and coachability. While we didn’t get as many scoring chances as we’d like to, to still go on the road and get a positive result is a good performance for us.”
Just like the entire game, the second overtime featured quality scoring chances for both teams. Ashton Duty almost ended the game in the 101st minute of the second overtime, but the Elon goalkeeper made a diving save on the shot that was a few yards out from the left corner of the box.
UNCG had the only three shots on goal in the two overtime periods.
Elon put early pressure on goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper in the second half. Tyler-Cooper made six saves of her seven saves in the game on 10 shots by the Phoenix in the half.
“Tyler-Cooper played well tonight,” said Coll. “Elon has some good shooters from distance, and so Aiyanah had to make some good saves. Overall she was solid.”
The first half featured one shot on goal from each squad.
The Phoenix had a 22-11 shots advantage, but both teams placed seven shots on goal. The Spartans had the edge in corner kicks, 5-4.
UNCG will be at home next weekend, facing Richmond Friday at 7 p.m. and UNCW Sunday at 2 p.m.
