UNCG beats The Citadel 5-0 on the Road
CHARLESTON, S.C. – UNCG women’s soccer (7-2-1, 2-0-0) exploded for four second-half goals in a 5-0 win over The Citadel (6-5-0, 0-3-0) Friday evening at WLI Field. Cienna Rideout and Nicole Souply both had a pair of goals for the Spartans.
“It was a very hot day but our skill and attacking quality was the difference,” said head coach Michael Coll. “The Citadel have some nice players, but we were just too deep through our bench, and every time we got into the final third of the field we looked like we might score another goal in the second half. Now we need to rest and refocus for a good Mercer team on Sunday.”
Rideout scored the game-winning goal in the 10th minute. After a contested ball, she put her shot in the net from just outside the box. Gracie Timbario picked up an assist on the play.
The second goal from Rideout came in the 47th minute. She was able to get by two defenders and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one.
Rideout has scored five of her team-high nine goals in the last two games after recording her second collegiate hat trick in a 4-0 at VMI last Friday.
Souply got her first goal in the 50th minute, burying a shot off a cross from Quiqui Hita.
Not even three minutes later Souply recorded her second goal and fourth of the season. After receiving a pass from Timbario, Rideout fed a cross right in front of the net for Souply.
The last goal came in the 77th minute when Caroline Fiorella scored her second goal of the season. Isabelle Blomdahl played in to Kayla Campbell on a corner kick, and Fiorella headed the ball in.
The Spartans finished with a 24-14 shots advantage, including an 11-3 edge in the first half. 17 of the 24 shots were placed on goal.
Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper (7-2-1) made five saves for her third shutout.
Rideout had a game-high eight shots, six on goal. Souply finished with four, and Grace Regal and Fiorella had three shots with two on goal.
UNCG returns to action at Mercer Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
