UNCG Shuts Out Chattanooga 3-0 at Home
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro women’s soccer (12-3-1, 7-1-0) shut out the Chattanooga Mocs 3-0 Friday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium. Quiqui Hita, Caroline Fiorella and Nicole Souply were the three Spartan goal scorers.
“It was a tight game in the first half," said UNCG head coach Michael Coll. “Chattanooga gave us a lot to think about and played well. I thought they were one of the best teams we've played in the Southern Conference all year. It looked early to be kind of a tight, 1-0 game. We really opened up play well and did well to get three good goals.”
With 21 points in SoCon play, UNCG will square off against Samford (22 points) at home Sunday at 2 p.m. for the SoCon Regular Season Championship and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. The Spartans need a victory to secure the title, while the Bulldogs can claim it with a win or tie. UNCG will finish no lower than second after Mercer (14 points) defeated ETSU (15) 2-1 in double overtime at home on Friday night.
“Sunday is going to be massive because it’s one versus two, and the winner is regular season champion." said Coll. “That's been one of our team goals all year, and it feels awesome that the players have worked so hard and now have the opportunity to accomplish this team goal.”
After a tight game that featured only a couple scoring chances, Hita scored the game-winning goal in the 44th minute. Heida Ragney Vidarsdottir made several moves to get past several Mocs’ defenders and passed it to Jordin Mosley in the right corner. Hita then buried Mosley’s cross in the middle of the box into the top right corner of the net for her fourth goal of the year.
UNCG put early pressure on Chattanooga to start the second half, and it resulted in a goal in the 64th minute. Cienna Rideout chipped a ball past a Mocs’ defender at midfield, dribbled the ball down and passed it into the top of the box for Fiorella, who put a shot past the sliding goalkeeper into the bottom right of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Souply added a late insurance goal and her sixth of the year in the 89th minute. Grace Kennedy lobbed a pass into the box off a Chattanooga turnover, and Souply raced in to chip a shot past the goalkeeper in the left side of the net.
UNCG goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper made six saves for the Spartan’s eighth shutout of the season.
UNCG finished with a 16-12 shots advantage, including 9-6 in shots on goal.
Souply and Hita tied for a game-high four shots, and Hita put all four on goal. Rideout also had three shots.
