UNCG Suffers First Loss to UNCG 4-3 at Home
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG women’s soccer (2-1-1) suffered its first loss of the 2018 season to the UNCW Seahawks (3-1-0) 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Soccer Stadium. Tied 1-1 at halftime, the Seahawks scored three of the first four goals in the second half.
The game-winning goal came in the 84th minute by Kirsten Bootes. After a ball bounced off a UNCG defender, Bootes dribbled into the middle of the box and shot it into the right side of the net.
Kaley Tucker cut the Spartans’ deficit to one goal in the next minute, but UNCG ran out of time to generate another quality scoring chance. Tucker got her third goal of the season on a header off a cross from Marissa Ferrantino.
UNCW scored two goals in the first six minutes of the second half to take a 3-1 advantage. Molly McGarry broke the tie in the 47th minute when a cross from the right corner by Dominique Martinez went by everyone in the box and bounced right to her, where she knocked down the ball and scored from a few yards out.
The next goal came in the 51st minute from Baley Edwards. On a give and go with Martinez, Baley scored on a shot just inside the middle of the box.
Cienna Rideout got UNCG’s first goal of the second half in the 56th minute. Heida Ragney Vidarsdottir lofted a pass from the midfield over the defense, and Rideout dribbled in and scored her second goal in the last two games from the right side of the box.
UNCW scored the game’s first goal in the 19th minute. Off a turnover, Tara Pak put a shot in the top right of the net from the left side of the box.
UNCG tied the game up in the 36th minute. Grace Regal was tripped up in the box to draw a penalty kick. Emily Jensen took it and put a low shot into the left side of the net for her first goal of the year.
Goalkeeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper registered three saves.
UNCW finished with a slight advantage in shots (13-12) and corner kicks (5-4) while UNCG had one more shot on goal (8-7).
UNCG will return to action next Friday at 7 p.m. at Longwood.
