UNI defeats CSUB 3-1
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—Northern Iowa (4-7-2) defeated CSU Bakersfield (2-9-1) 3-1 in women’s soccer action at the Cedar Valley Complex Friday night.
Leilani Skinner (Fr., Agua Prieta Sonora, Mexico, Sahuaro HS, Tucson, Ariz.) converted a Jessica Fogeltanz (Sr., Camarillo, Calif., Ventura College) pass and scored her first career goal at the 9:52 mark. The Panthers tied the match on a CSUB own goal in the 20th minute. Claire Cook put UNI up 2-1 at 57:11. Kelsey Dodler was credited with the assist. Allie Brees added a goal in the 73rd minute to make it the final 3-1.
The Roadrunners outshot the Panthers 15-7, but UNI held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
"Our defensive and attacking thirds have not been good enough in recent games and tonight proved that trend," said CSUB head coach Melissa Phillips. "With the yough of our team, much work is needed in these two areas. We had opportunities to go up 3-1 in the first half, such was our dominance in the first 45. We paid for missing those opportunities and came out performed poorly in the second half on two defensive plays. Yet again, we have to regroup and focus our next match on Sunday."
CSUB heads to Drake on Sunday to complete its stay in the Hawkeye State. The match will begin at 11 a.m. (PDT).
