Upset-minded FMU falls to #8 Nighthawks
FLORENCE, SC – A young Francis Marion University squad put up one of its best defensive efforts of the year against eighth-ranked University of North Georgia on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 24), but the Nighthawks scored twice in the final five minutes to seal a 4-0 win over the Patriots in Peach Belt Conference women's soccer action.
FMU, which started seven freshmen on Saturday, drops its second straight game to a nationally ranked opponent, and falls to 0-8-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the PBC. The Patriots will host Lander University on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for the squad’s annual Sea of Red match.
North Georgia (4-1-1, 2-1-0) employed three goalkeepers with sophomore Sarah Allen getting credit for the win.
Francis Marion held UNG scoreless until Daizah Patterson took a pass from Renee VanHorn and scored on an 11-yard shot in the 38th minute. The Nighthawks doubled the margin to 2-0 at the 63:45 mark when Jacy Ramey’s shot in the box rolled into the netting.
North Georgia iced the win with scores by VanHorn and Veronica Cappas in the 86th and 90th minutes respectively.
FMU junior goalkeeper Casey Murakami faced 29 shots and registered nine saves, including several diving and leaping stops. The save total was one shy of her career high.
