Upstate Downed by Charleston Southern at Citadel/Nike Soccer Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Competing in its second and final contest of the Citadel/Nike Soccer Classic, the USC Upstate women’s soccer team fell to Charleston Southern by a score of 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.
CSU (1-3-0) capitalized on 12 first-half shots as it tallied three first-half goals en route to a 3-0 lead at halftime. Toni Lashley put the Lady Buccanners in front 1-0 in the 15th-minute when she put her shot past Upstate (0-4-1) keeper Sarah Plantz (Cartersville, Ga.). CSU also scored goals came in the 33rd- (Rebecca Hollstegge) and 41st-minutes (Caroline Eriksson).
“We again failed to put together a full 90 minutes,” said head coach Renee Lopez. “We will regroup and begin our preparations for next weekend.”
The Lady Buccaneers tacked on its fourth and final goal in the contest when Gina Thomas scored on a header off of a pass from Caroline Eriksson in the 72nd-minute.
CSU led the way in shots (23-3), shots on-goal (12-1) and corner kicks (8-5). Upstate totaled eight saves in the match, compared to one for CSU.
CSU was called for 10 fouls and whistled offsides six times, while Upstate committed five fouls.
The Spartans will return to the pitch on Friday night when they travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to face Winthrop at 7 p.m.
