URI Holds Off Yale 3-1
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale ran into an angry Rhode Island team Saturday at Reese Stadium. The Rams, the defending Atlantic 10 regular season champions, had lost two straight games, including a 2-0 home loss to St. Francis Brooklyn on Wednesday. URI took out its frustration on the Bulldogs, scoring a pair of late first-half goals en route to a 3-0 victory.
The Rams (5-4) had the edge in possession early in the game, but Yale’s defense kept the scoring chances to a minimum.
URI, though, finally broke through at 38:02 when Ryan Bailey scored off a corner kick. Ryan Oakley sent a cross into the box, it deflected to Bailey, who fired it home from in front.
Less than four minutes later, the Rams struck again. This time, Emil Jesman Sunde settled a cross from Oakley and scored from 12 yards out.
“I thought the guys did a really good job sticking with the game plan until the first goal,” said Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. “We were six and a half minutes from going into the locker room at least 0-0 and within about three minutes we find ourselves down 2-0. I wasn’t happy at all with the way we reacted after the first goal. The good news is that the goals that we are allowing are still very fixable things, but we must find a way to make better plays in those critical areas.”
The Bulldogs were much more dangerous in the second half but also were a bit unlucky.
A giveaway by the Bulldogs in their own end, led to Dominick Richter scoring the third URI goal at 64:18.
Yale then controlled the play for most of the rest of the way and had opportunities, particularly Ollie Iselin, who had one shot bang off the crossbar and another deflect off the post.
Yale (1-6) outshot the Rams 8-6 in the second half.
“There is no quit in this team and they fought until the final whistle,” Stannard said.
The Bulldogs will now turn their attention to the start of Ivy League play, which begins next Saturday at home against Harvard. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
“We are already focusing on the next game,” Stannard said. “We can start fresh in the sense that we have a clean slate going into the Ivy League and we are excited to get started with the conference.”
