USF Remains Undefeated at Home with 2-1 Vict
TAMPA, Oct. 4, 2018 – Juniors Brianna Blethen and Evelyne Viens each scored to power USF to victory over Cincinnati, 2-1.
USF (7-2-0, 2-1-0) continued its hot offense with 24 shots on the night and two goals. The Bulls, with the top scoring offense in the nation, had 13 shots on goal with two goals. In the 69th minute, midfielder Andrea Hauksdottir (Kopavogur, Iceland) set up for a corner that she sent into the center of the box. Defender Blethen (Bradenton, Fla.) scored her second goal of the season with a header to give USF a 1-0 advantage and a momentum boost.
Just five minutes later, the nation's leader in goals per game, Viens (Canada) took a pass from freshman and fellow Canadian Mia Palango. She took a long shot from the top center of the box and sent the ball to the top left corner past the reach of the Cincinnati keeper for what would be the game-winner. Viens had 10 of USF's 24 shots, five on goal.
The Bearcats (6-6-2, 1-3-2) scored on a penalty kick in the 77th minute to keep the Bulls from its fourth shutout of the season. Despite the penalty kick, freshman keeper Sydney Martinez faced fifteen shots and finished the night with six saves.
