USMNT World Cup Squad Development: Part 3
The second part of the series tracing the development pathways of the U.S. Men’s National Team World Cup roster is below.
Check out part one and part two from earlier this week as TDS looks back at how each player reached the professional ranks and national team.
F Christian Pulisic
Current Club: Chelsea FC (ENG)
Youth National Team Experience: U15, U17 World Cup (2015)
Youth Club: PA Classics
An attacking midfielder/winger, Pulisic moved to Germany to play for Borussia Dortmund at 15. He was a fixture in the USYNT setups, culminating in a now famous performance against Brazil in a U17 tournament. Across three years of youth national team play, he scored 11 goals in 44 games. He earned his first senior call up at 16 and has been the US's great hope since. He now plays for Chelsea, where his appearances have been mixed, but his attacking quality is evident.
D Tim Ream
Current Club: Fulham FC (ENG)
Youth National Team Experience: N/A
Youth Club: St. Louis Scott Gallagher
College: Saint Louis
One of two St. Louis natives on the roster, Ream played for club powerhouse St. Louis Scott Gallagher and at Dominic High School. After playing four seasons at Saint Louis – where he competed for USL PDL side Chicago Fire Premier – he was drafted by the New York Red Bulls in 2010, beginning a pro career that would eventually take him to England in 2012.
M Gio Reyna
Current Club: Borussia Dortmund (GER)
Youth National Team Experience: U15, U17 World Cup (2019)
Youth Club: New York City FC
Another player to make the leap abroad, Reyna moved from NYCFC’s academy to Dortmund in 2019. He was a part of USYNT setups from U15-U17 level, where he soon became a promising young talent. Reyna is one of two players on the World Cup squad that made the U.S. roster for the U17 World Cup just three years ago in 2019. Gregg Berhalter handed Reyna his first international cap in 2020, where he hit the ground running. His most famous performance came recently at the Azteca, where he dribbled past six players in a slaloming run. The US will need more of that in the weeks to come.
D Antonee Robinson
Current Club: Fulham FC (ENG)
Youth National Team Experience: U18, U20, U23
Youth Club: Everton FC (ENG)
Born in England, the left back is one of five dual nationals developed abroad to make the World Cup roster. Robinson did get plenty of experience with various U.S. youth national team camps, although never played in a competitive tournament. The 25 year old has featured more regularly in the setup over the last 18 months, where he nailed down the starting left back spot.
M Cristian Roldan
Current Club: Seattle Sounders FC
Youth National Team Experience: U20
Youth Club: Union Independiente
College: Washington
During the heydey of the Development Academy, Roldan was a high school soccer standout recruited by UW head coach Jamie Clark. After excelling for the Pac-12 power, he left school to sign a Generation adidas contract, where he was drafted by the Seattle Sounders. He came into the international fold more consistently in 2019 and has 32 caps to date. These days, he’s a regular starter for perennial winners Seattle Sounders in MLS.
F Josh Sargent
Current Club: Norwich City FC (ENG)
Youth National Team Experience: U15, U17 World Cup (2017), U20 World Cup (2017, 2019)
Youth Club: St. Louis Scott Gallagher/IMG Academy Residency
Sargent was one of the most promising youth products in his class, starring for Scott Gallagher Soccer Club as a teenager. He moved to Werder Bremen in 2017, before moving to Norwich in 2021. Sargent broke out at the U17 World Cup in 2017, scoring five goals in the tournament, including a brace against Mexico. He was equally impressive at the U20 level, bagging two in his U20 World Cup debut just six weeks later. Sargent has 20 international caps with five goals to his name. He’s had a promising start to the season for Norwich, which is currently in the playoff picture.
