Utah Soccer Ties Boise State, 1-1
BOISE, Idaho - Utah junior Mikayla Elmer notched the first goal of her career as the Utes played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Boise State this evening.
Utah’s first attempt came in the eighth minute when Baylee Nielsen’s header sailed wide. Kaycee Buckley had a chance in the 12th minute but her try blazed over the bar.
BSU registered the next seven shots, with Utah blocking three attempts and Lindsey Luke denying Baylee Blaser
Utah’s breakthrough occurred in the 37th minute when Mikayla Elmer’s try hit the post and bounced back to her. The junior followed it home from three yards out for the first goal of her career.
In the second half, Luke stopped Eva Herrera and Utah countered to earn a corner. However, Ali Allen’s shot went wide. Utah earned another corner in the 62nd minute and Nielsen’s header was cleared off the line, resulting in another corner.
Elmer had a chance for a second goal but was denied by BSU goalkeeper Janelle Flores. The Broncos peppered the Ute goal in the final 20 minutes with Luke making a pair of key saves on Laura Buck.
Unfortunately, Boise State was awarded a penalty kick in the final minute and Hailey Devries converted with 22 seconds remaining on the clock to even the score.
In overtime, BSU could not get the ball past the Utah defenders and Nielsen had a third header attempt go wide right. After an Eden Jacobsen try go high, Sarah Taylor hit the crossbar for the Broncos and Luke stopped Buck.
The second overtime session saw two good chances for the Utes. Flores denied Natalie Vukic before Mariah Elmer was also turned aside by the Bronco goalkeeper
Utah finished with 11 shots and Luke ended with five saves. The teams finished even with five corner-kicks apiece.
The Utes remained unbeaten in seven games all-time between the programs and ran its unbeaten streak against teams from the Mountain West Conference to six games.
Utah will host Utah State next Friday at 4:30 p.m. This is the annual Red Out game for the Utes.
