UTRGV Rallies Past Saints
Damian Magallan, Jr. scored two of UT Rio Grande Valley’s four unanswered goals as UTRGV rallied past Siena Soccer 4-1 on the final day of the HBU Invitational in Houston, Texas. Junior midfielder Diego Ruiz scored his first collegiate goal for the Saints.
UTRGV (1-1) held a 23-8 advantage in shots and an 8-3 margin in corners, but trailed late into the first half thanks to Ruiz’s tally. Freshman striker Aaron Martin set up the score which gave Siena (0-1-1) the early 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.
However, UTRGV scored twice in just a 1:45 span to claim the lead for good. In the 33rd minute Jaako Hietikko evened the score, and then set up the eventual game-winning go-ahead tally from Magallan, Jr. moments later.
UTRGV added a pair of insurance goals in the second half on scores from Kyle Edwards (56’) and Magallan, Jr. (65’) to provide the final margin.
Freshman goalkeeper Greg Monroe made six saves for the Saints.
Siena concludes its season opening three-match road trip Friday night with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Holy Cross.
