UW-W falls in PKs; Awaits Possible NCAA Bid
LA CROSSE, Wis. - One hundred and ten minutes was not enough to determine a winner in Saturday's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship final. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team and UW-La Crosse needed a shootout. The Warhawks, in their eighth consecutive WIAC final, fell to UW-L 4-3 on penalty kicks. The tournament title is the first for the Eagles since 1996.
The Warhawks went to work early, firing a shot in the first thirty seconds of the match, but Anna Boyd's attempt was blocked.
UW-L tallied the first shot on goal of the match in the sixth minute, but Warhawk keeper Nina Yonan(Skokie, Ill./Niles North) made the stop.
Alyssa Lennon (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) and Mackenzie Serbousek (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie) each tested UW-L's keeper, Lily Brock, over the course of the next 17 minutes, but the Eagle keeper was positioned to make saves on both.
Karina Rosales (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) finally put the Warhawks on the scoreboard in th 32nd minute scoring her fifth goal of the season, this one unassisted.
Six minutes later the match was tied when the Eagles connected on some nice passing to beat Yonan, and the teams headed into halftime knotted at one.
The Eagles turned up the pressure in the second half, testing Yonan six times, but the sophomore keeper withstood the pressure to keep the Eagles out of the net.
UW-W had their best opportunities of the second half when Anna Boyd put shots on goal in the 79th and 90th minutes, but Brock was again in the right spot to make both saves and the match headed to overtime.
Both teams had a pair of opportunities in the overtime periods, but neither was able to capitalize and the team's headed to a shootout.
After three shots apiece, the shootout was tied 2-2. A successful attempt by Lauren Otto (Richmond, Ill./Richmond Burton Community) was followed by a goal by the Eagles, making it 3-3 heading to the final shooter. UW-W missed their fifth attempt, and UW-L followed with a goal to earn the victory.
UW-W, 14-3-4 and looking to make their seventh straight NCAA tournament appearance, will now wait and hope to receive an at-large bid into the 2017 NCAA Division III Championship. The announcement of the 64-team field will be made on Monday, November 6 at noon. Visit uwwsports.com on Monday for more information.
