UW-Whitewater Hands Millikin First Loss
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team dealt Millikin University their first loss of the season Saturday night in Decatur, Illinois. The Warhawks topped the Big Blue 5-1 to improve to 4-2-2.
Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) scored his fifth goal of the season in the sixth minute to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
UW-W's Jordan Kayser (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) and Kevin Mesich (West Allis, Wis./West Allis Hale) each tried to extend the Warhawks' lead but Millikin goalkeeper Trevor Creek made the stop on both shots.
Jeremy Cohen (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) connected on a diving header in the 31st minute to give UW-W a 2-0 advantage. Both Hottsmith and Taylor Ortiz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) were credited with assists.
Millikin was whistled for a foul in the box in the 42nd minute resulting in a penalty kick for UW-W. Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) was elected to take the kick, but Creek made the save and the Warhawks entered halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Jake Santellano (North Brook, Ill./Glenbrook North) opened things up for the Warhawks scoring his first goal of the season in the 55th minute.
Hottsmith added an assist to his line when he found Jack Wirth (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) six minutes later to give the Warhawks a 4-0 advantage.
The Warhawks pushed their lead to 5-0 in the 71st minute when Taylor Ortiz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) found Yoshihiko Fukushima (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) for his second goal of the season.
Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) started and played 65 minutes, making three saves and giving up zero goals to earn the win. Toney Anderson (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) came on in relief to play the rest of the game.
The Warhawks totaled 19 shots in the match, 12 coming in the second half.
UW-W returns home for their next game on Wednesday, September 28th when they host Loras at 5 p.m. for their annual battle for the Hawk Cup. The Warhawks are in current possession of the cup after topping Loras 2-1 in Dubuque last season.
