FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Saint Mary's University women's soccer coach Neil Cassidy summed up Sunday's performance against Marian in one simple word: “Awesome.”
SMU gave Cassidy his first victory as the Cardinals' head coach, getting a pair of goals from Teri Valenzuela (Morton Grove, Ill.) en route to a 3-1 nonconference win over Marian.
“It feels awesome,” said Cassidy, whose team snapped its season-opening three-game losing streak with the victory. “We made some adjustments after (Saturday's 3-1 loss at UW-Oshkosh) and it really paid off.
“The ladies have worked so hard over the past three weeks, and it was really nice to see them get rewarded for their efforts.”
Valenzuela netted her first collegiate goal, and liked it so much that she added her second, while Amanda Rahman (Rochester, Minn.) recorded her second goal in as many days to account for the Cardinals' other tally vs. Marian.
SMU (1-3 overall) begins Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, hosting St. Thomas in a 7 p.m. contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
