Vandals Fall in 2OT Heartbreaker
MOSCOW, Idaho—The Vandals played perhaps their best complete game Sunday against UNLV. Idaho totaled 12 shots in 109 minutes of play but fell just short to the Rebels on Guy Wicks Field, 1-0, in double overtime.
“I could not be more proud of the players today,” head coach Pete Showler said. “They went out and left nothing on the pitch. They worked hard for each other. Everybody worked their socks off. It is a cruel way to lose that game. I felt we deserved to get something from that game.”
Had it not been for outstanding keeper play from sophomore Marina Siegl and freshman Torell Stewart the final score sheet may have looked a bit different. Siegl and Stewart combined for a total of seven saves. Stewart was forced to make two crucial saves in the first overtime session and then a third save in the second overtime to keep the Vandals even with UNLV.
“Both keepers pulled off big saves when they needed to,” Showler commented. “The keepers do their job just as well as anybody else and it keeps us in games.”
The Vandals saw an offensive spark from Kaysha Darcy in the starting 11. Darcy totaled three shots with one on net. Kat Comesana subbed into the game and added to the offensive prowl with three shots of her own. The 12 total shots are the second most for Idaho on the season.
UNLV (5-2-1) got the golden goal off the foot of Kristin Sankey at the 109 minute mark. She hit her free kick from 35 yards outside the goal and found the upper right corner post and the ball bounced across the goal line into the left side net.
“We start a new season tomorrow,” Showler stated. “The conference is a completely new season. It is a new slate. We move on from these first seven games and if we play like today we are going to get results.”
Idaho (0-7-0) will open the conference season against Grand Canyon at Guy Wicks Field on Sept. 22. GCU is new to the Western Athletic Conference in 2013 as well as Division I. First kick is set for 1:00 p.m. PT.
