Vanderbilt records 12th straight win
October 5, 2018
NASHVILLE – The No. 19 Commodores made history on Thursday in defeating No. 25 Mississippi State, 1-0, to extend their winning streak to 12 games. The 12 consecutive wins sets a new Vanderbilt program record.
Vanderbilt moved to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play to stay in first place in the standings. That start is the Dores' best in conference play since the 2005 team also started 5-0.
The Dores outshot the Bulldogs (8-3-1, 1-2-1) with a mark of 15-7, but the game remained scoreless until the 76thminute. Nia Dorsey flew up the right sideline and tried to send a cross into the box, but it was deflected and came right back to her. She recovered the rebound, sent another cross and, after glancing off a Bulldog defender, bounced it right to Raegan Kelley.
The freshman Kelley proceeded to head the ball into the far left side of the goal. Kelley's first-career goal proved to be the difference-maker in the game, and the Dores held on the rest of the way.
The Commodores' defense was once again strong in the contest, only allowing one shot on goal. The shutout marked the seventh time this season the Dores have shut out their opponent, and their second straight.
Lauren Demarchi got the start in goal and saw little action aside for a single save early in the second half. She moved to 9-0 this season, recording her second straight shutout.
Vanderbilt notched its 10th straight win at home dating back to last season.
Up next, the Dores travel to Knoxville to take on No. 9 Tennessee for their second straight ranked matchup of the season. The game can be viewed on ESPNU.
