FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.--Playing in front of a national television audience on Fox College Sports, Chloe Varvell (Fr. San Jose, Calif., Branham HS) scored 3:38 into overtime to give CSU Bakersfield a 3-2 victory over Northern Arizona Friday night.
The Roadrunners (6-10-2) took a 2-0 lead on a pair of Emily Noethe (So., Dallas, Ga., East Spaulding HS) before the Lumberjacks (5-9-5) battled back, scoring in the 55th and the 65th minutes. Varvell's goal was unassisted as her cleared ball lofted into the upper left of the NAU goal.
The Lumberjacks outshot the Roadrunners 20-10, but CSUB held a 8-6 shots on goal advantage. The Lumberjacks had nine corner kicks compared to only two for CSUB. Both teams had to battle the elements as gametime temperature was 35 degrees in Lumberjack Stadium.
"I am very pleased with our first half performance," said CSUB head coach Melissa Phillips. NAU did a good job pushing the tempo in the second half although I feel we let in some easy goals. We were able to regain our composure in overtime. We committed to the process and finished the game."
The Roadrunners complete the 2012 season Sunday afternoon at Southern Utah. Gametime is 12 p.m. (MDT).
