Visiting Seton Hall Tops Highlanders
NEWARK, NJ--Visiting Seton Hall scored twice in each half, defeating NJIT 4-1 in non-conference men's soccer action at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium Tuesday evening.
The Pirates snap a four-match skid, moving to 2-4 on the season while the Highlanders stand at 2-3-3 on the season.
Camil Koreichi scored a pair of goals for Seton Hall in the 21st and 72nd minute followed by a turning point goal in the match, which came in the 40th minute by Sean MacLeod off a free kick. Andrea Borg scored a goal in the 82nd minute to secure the 4-1 victory.
NJIT redshirt junior Rene White scored the Highlanders lone goal in the 31st minute, his ASUN Conference leading seventh of the season.
Seton Hall held a slight edge in overall shot, 19-16 while both teams were even at 4-4 in corner kicks. NJIT's Diogo Ferreira paced the home team with four total shots followed by four different Highlanders, recording two apiece.
Pirates keeper Andreas Nota stopped seven Highlander shots in the win while freshman Samuel Reisgys combined for four saves.
In the opening two minutes, NJIT recorded the first shot of the match on a blast by junior forward transfer Gerald Cubero just outside the box, saved by the Seton Hall keeper.
Seton Hall struck first in the 21st minute on a free kick served into the middle of the box. Koreichi took the first shot, which was knocked out by NJIT's Samuel Reisgys. In an attempt to clear the ball by the NJIT defense, Koreichi collected the rebound and netted the first goal of the game.
NJIT knotted the match at 1-1 in the 31st minute on a left-footed goal by White, assisted by Alejandro Rabell. Rabell, which recorded his third assist, slipped the ball between two Pirate defenders, finding White, who netted his seventh goal of the season, which leads all players in the ASUN Conference.
In the 33rd minute, NJIT's Thomas Radon had an open net opportunity but Seton Hall's Andrea Nota smothered the ball to keep the game knotted at 1-1.
Seton Hall regained the lead, 2-1, in the 40th minute off a free kick by Sean MacLeod, curving the ball over the NJIT wall, to the right of a diving Reisgys.
NJIT had a pair of opportunities in the 54th minute by Diogo Ferreira -- the first shot blocked by the Pirate defense and second shot on target but saved by Nota.
Ferreira continuing to pressure the Pirate defense put another shot on target two minutes later, blasting a shot from 30 yards out, skinning the top of the crossbar.
Koreichi netted his second goal of the match for the Pirates in the 72nd minute assisted by Stephan Elias for a 3-1 advantage. Elias served the ball on a cross from the right side after an NJIT turnover to Koreichi, who tucked away to the upper right.
Seton Hall added a goal in the 82nd minute on a left-footed unassisted goal by Andrea Borg, his second goal of the season.
NJIT will return to ASUN Conference action on Saturday at 1:30pm when the Highlanders host Liberty Flames.
In the first meeting last season, Liberty topped the visiting Highlanders, 2-1, on October 6.
