Vogel Named PL Rookie of the Wee
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy freshman defenseman Derek Vogel was named the BRINE / Patriot League Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday afternoon. Vogel earns the accolade after helping the Midshipmen defeat Robert Morris in their lone contest of the week.
In the 2-0 win over Robert Morris, Vogel, a 6-3, 200-pound freshman from Long Beach, Calif., started the contest at the midfield position. However, after Robert Morris fired off seven shots in the game's first 15 minutes, Vogel was then moved to the defensive backfield and the unit flourished. The Colonials totaled just four shots over the next 75 minutes of the contest, including just one in the last 30 minutes of the first half and three for the entire second half. A big, physical presence in the back, Vogel helped keep Robert Morris off the scoreboard for Navy's first victory and shutout of the year.
Vogel has started both of Navy's games this year and has played all 180 minutes in the two contests so far.
On Saturday, Vogel and his teammates will host a strong High Point team, which enters with a 3-0-0 record with victories over Elon (4-2), Adelphi (3-1) and Northern Kentucky (6-0). Kick-off is slated for 7:00 PM at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
