Vols & Wildcats Battle to 2-2 Draw
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A late equalizer off the foot of Ariel Kupritz helped Tennessee earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Kentucky on a brisk Friday night at Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington.
Kupritz scored her second goal of the season in the 84th minute, getting on the end of a great low cross by Hannah Wilkinson to tie the game at two. With the tie, UT (9-6-1, 4-3-1 SEC) remained unbeaten over its last four games with three wins and a draw.
Wilkinson scored the other goal for the Volunteers, her sixth in the last five games, and finished with three points in the match. The New Zealand native has now scored in five consecutive games for UT. Wilkinson led the Big Orange with four shots while six other players also recorded a shot for Tennessee on the night. Sophie Babo led the Kentucky attack, scoring both goals for the Wildcats.
Wilkinson went around Wildcats' goalkeeper Evangeline Soucie on a breakaway for her ninth goal of the season to open the scoring in the 17th minute. The goal helped Wilkinson tie her previous single-season mark for goals set back in 2014. She was sprung free on a great pass up the middle of the field by center back Kathryn Culhane, who earned her first-career assist on the play.
Kupritz nearly gave UT a two-goal advantage in the 30th minute as her curling shot from outside the box rang off the inside of the left post.
Kentucky (4-6-4, 0-5-3) pulled even in the 35th minute on a goal by Babo. The sophomore forward headed home a great service into the box off a corner kick by Tanya Samarzich to tie the game at one with just over 10 minutes left in the first half.
The teams entered halftime knotted at one after a very evenly played 45 minutes. Both sides finished the half with three shots and four fouls while the Wildcats held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair as both teams traded chances from the start. UK took the lead in the 69th minute when Babo converted a penalty kick after a Wildcats' player was taken down in the box by Kupritz.
However, for the second time this season Tennessee found an equalizer in the last 10 minutes of regulation as Kupritz made up for her error earlier in the half with a textbook finish off a perfect cross by Wilkinson from the left flank. Neither side was able to score again in regulation, sending the game to overtime.
The Vols had the first good chance in overtime as Wilkinson hit a half-volley just wide from about 20 yards out. The Wildcats had a great chance moments later after a mental lapse by the UT defense led to a free kick from just outside the box. Shae Yanez came up with her biggest save of the night on the ensuing free kick to keep the game going for UT.
Wilkinson had one more chance for the Vols with just over two minutes to go but her header went wide of frame. Kentucky finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots for the night, including a 5-2 edge in the two overtime periods.
The Vols and Wildcats have now tied their last two meetings after a 1-1 draw in Knoxville last season. UT returns home next week for its final two home games of the season. The Orange and White host Mississippi State on Thursday night before welcoming No. 2 South Carolina on Sunday evening for Senior Night. Both games can be streamed live on SEC Network +/WatchESPN.
