Wagner Drops Tight 1-0 Decision To IUPUI
Staten Island, NY – Despite holding an 11-10 advantage in shots and having multiple dangerous scoring opportunities late in the game, the Wagner College women's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season, falling to IUPUI by a 1-0 count on Sunday afternoon at cloudy Hameline Field.
With the loss, Wagner falls to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Jaguars even their record at 3-3.
Both teams started slowly, as junior Jess Aletta (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) and freshman Mattea Reale (Ancaster, Ontario, Canada / Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School) had the only attempts on goal in the first period. Defensively, the Seahawks pressured their opponents early, allowing only one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes of play.
The Jaguars struck six minutes into the second half, as Krissy Kirkhoff got the ball past sophomore Delaney Beck (Bakersfield, CA / Garces Memorial) in goal after a breakaway opportunity for what proved to be the game's lone score.
The Green and White responded with multiple scoring opportunities, but freshman Mya Donnelly's (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) attempt went just wide of the right post in the 60th minute. Shortly afterwards, junior Sandra Battista (Staten Island, NY / Notre Dame Academy) had the best chance to even the score, but her lob from the edge of the penalty box hit off the crossbar and was then deflected out of bounds for a corner kick.
After an excellent save by Beck on another IUPUI scoring chance, sophomore Maria Nunez (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) could not get the ball past the Jaguars' goalkeeper from 18 yards away with nine minutes to play.
The game's last five minutes saw the Seahawks push for the equalizer, as they had several chances after corner kicks, but a Battista header from close range was saved on what proved to be the most promising late scoring chance.
Battista led Wagner with four shots, while Donnelly and Reale both had two attempts. Beck led the team with two saves, with junior Katie Viscardi (Hazlet, NJ / Mater Dei Prep) contributing one stop in the first half.
Next up, the Seahawks will travel to Jersey City, NJ on Wednesday for a 3:00 pm kickoff at Saint Peter's.
