Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's soccer team will conclude its brief two-match homestand when the Seahawks welcome Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) member, Rider, to Staten Island on Tuesday evening. The Green & White are looking for their first win of the 2018 season after falling to Army West Point, 2-0, in the season opener last Friday.
All-Time Against Rider || Tonight's contest between the Seahawks and the Broncs is the tenth all-time meeting between the two schools with Rider leading the head-to-head matchup, 5-4. Last season, a pair of first-half goals by Maria Nunez and Christine Letendre proved to be all the offense needed for Wagner as the Seahawks picked up a 2-1 victory on the road at Rider.
Wagner Against The MAAC || Against the current 11 members of the MAAC, Wagner is a combined 31-76-9 all-time. This record includes contests against former NEC members, Monmouth and Quinnipiac. The Seahawks haven't played either program since 2012. Last season, the Green & White squared off against three MAAC schools (Rider, Saint Peter's and Iona), posting a 2-0-1 record as they last tied Iona, 2-2, back on September 10 in New Rochelle.
Scouting Rider || The Broncs scored with under five minutes to go in regulation to tie Drexel, 1-1, in their regular season opener last Friday. Kourtney Cunningham scored the tying goal after collecting a corner kick that was knocked out of the box by a Drexel defender. Cunningham rocketed a shot to the top, right upper 90 as it deflected off a Dragons defender and underneath the crossbar to tie the game at 1-1. Carmen Carbonell stopped 12 Drexel shots while Valeria Pascuet led the Broncs with four shots on goal.
Collegiate Debuts || In the home opener against Army West Point this past Friday, second-year head coach Phil Casella elected to start to two freshmen in Luisa Barone and Christina Bacon. Barone played the full ninety and recorded her first collegiate shot on goal in the 30th minute of the contest. Bacon, played 80 minutes in her first collegiate start. Coach Casella elected to use newcomer Gabby Cipriano off the bench, as she logged 55 minutes of play.
Viscardi With The Save(s) || Senior goalkeeper Katie Viscardi stopped five of the seven shots she saw against Army in the season opener last Friday. For her career, the Hazlet, NJ native has recorded 129 saves in her Seahawk career.
Up Next For Wagner || The Seahawks will embark on a two-match road trip, beginning on Friday, August 24, when they take on Fairfield. The Green & White conclude the short road trip on Thursday, August 30 as they travel to Kingston, RI to take on Rhode Island. RIDER || The Broncs gear up for the first of three straight home contests, as they welcome fellow Northeast Conference (NEC) members, Fairleigh Dickinson, on Monday, August 27.
