Wake Forest Pulls Off Historic Upset
September 19, 2024 will forever go down as the day Wake Forest made NCAA history by defeating the top two teams in the country in back-to-back games. The 1-0 upset of Stanford also sets a personal best for the Deacs who take down the No. 1 ranked team for the first time in program history.
The game began with high intensity as Wake Forest fed off the frenzy of a rowdy home crowd of 1200 fans. And just 30 minutes in, the ACC underdogs took the lead. Caiya Hanks drove past multiple defenders, cut inside and found Colton at the top of the box, who would take advantage with a rocket into the top corner.

Stanford fought valiantly to push back but to no avail as Valentina Amaral made four saves to seal the historic victory. The result comes just four days after Wake Forest defeated then No. 2 Virginia 3-0, becoming the first team in history to achieve the feat of upsetting the top two teams in the country in back-to-back games.
There is no doubt, Wake Forest is now one of the teams to watch as a potential College Cup finalist as Tony da Luz has once again proved he is among the best coaches in college soccer.
