Warhawk Men Can't Hold Off #18 Luther
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team played #18 Luther College to the wire, but came up just short as they lost 4-3 to the visiting Norse Wednesday evening at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
Luther improves to 6-0 with the victory, while the Warhawks drop to 1-3-1 this season.
Kyle Clancy (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) put the Warhawks on the board in the 10th minute of the match with his first goal of the season. Clancy sent a ball from the corner with his right foot that bent towards the goal and into the net.
The lead last less than four minutes as Luther knotted the match with a successful penalty kick after a handball in the box.
Warhawk keeper Toney Anderson (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) made a pair of brilliant saves in the 18th and 22nd minutes to keep Luther from adding to their score.
Clancy took another corner in the 34th minute and sent another perfect ball towards the goal, but this time Jake Santellano (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) headed it in to the back of the net to give UW-W a 2-1 lead.
Anderson made one more save just before the half and UW-W went to the locker room with a one goal lead.
The second half got physical with four fouls in the first eight and half minutes, the fourth resulting in a penalty kick for the Warhawks.
Jack Wirth (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) converted his second PK opportunity of the season to give UW-W a two goal lead.
That lead shrunk to one in the 61st minute, and the match was tied five minutes later on a pair of goals by senior midfielder Colin Hughes.
The Norse took the lead with just under 11 minutes to play when they played a short corner to an open player, Brunno Colon, who ripped it past the defense and keeper for his second goal of the match.
UW-W battled with eight shots, five on goal, and four corners.
UW-W returns to the pitch on Saturday, September 15th for a home match against Concordia (Wis.) at 7 p.m. before beginning a four-game road trip on September 21.
