Warhawk Women Advance to WIAC Semis
Nearly two weeks ago, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team hopped on a bus and traveled to UW-Platteville to defeat the Pioneers 1-0. Tonight, with their season on the line, the Warhawks did the exact same thing.
Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) scored a goal in the 13th minute and the Warhawk defense did the rest to send UW-W to their 12th consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal.
UW-W, 10-9-1 and winners of four of their last five, will travel to UW-La Crosse on Thursday, November 1 for their semifinal match against the Eagles at 6:00 p.m.
Tuesday night's game was pretty similar to the one two weeks ago. UW-W outshot the Pioneers on both occasions and did not allow a single corner kick in either match.
Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) was the goal scorer in each event and Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) earned the shutout.
The Warhawk defense limited Platteville to just five shots Tuesday night, three of which were on goal.
The first came late in the first half, but Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) stopped Brianna Hampton's shot to preserve the 1-0 lead at the half.
Yonan made two other saves in the second half, including one in the final minutes to complete the shutout.
The Warhawks are 10-1 this season when they score the first goal of the match.
When UW-W returns to action on Thursday in the WIAC semifinals, they will face their toughest opponent of the season. When these two teams met back in early October, the Eagles won 6-0, the biggest loss for the Warhawks this year.
