Warhawks Celebrate Senior Day with Win
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team used an aggressive second half attack to wear down Edgewood College Saturday and improve to 3-1 with a 1-0 victory at home.
The match seemed to start quickly for the Warhawks, as they generated a pair of corner kicks in the first five minutes, but after that neither team could really generate much momentum.
The second half was a different story as the Warhawks turned up the pressure, registering three shots on goal in the first ten minutes.
Their first opportunity came one minute into the second half when Kaci Schonert (Racine, Wis./Horlick) hit a left-footed cross to Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) at the far post. Boyd got a head on it, but the Eagle keeper was perfectly positioned to make the save.
UW-W kept the pressure on with another chance at a goal two minutes later when Schonert sent a corner into the box that found Mackenzie Serbousek (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie), but Serbousek's header was blocked by a defender.
Another quality opportunity arose in the 69th minute when Boyd connected with Anna Perona (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy), but Perona's shot was rejected by a sliding Edgewood keeper, Grace Wildeboer.
Megan Glasbrenner (McFarland, Wis./McFarland) had a breakaway opportunity in the 76th minute after a ball from Carley Albrecht (Milton, Wis./Milton) snuck through the defense, but Glasbrenner was again turned away by Wildeboer.
The Warhawks finally found the back of the net in the 81st minute when Elli Wahlberg (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) linked up with freshman midfielder Carli Nehls (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North)for her first collegiate goal and a 1-0 lead.
After the match, Head Coach Ryan Quamme commented on the noticeable difference between the two halves, "I just didn't think we worked that hard in the first half. But the second half, the urgency was much better, we created some great chances, but we have to finish."
In her first start this season, junior Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) tallied one save in the match to earn the shutout and pick-up the win.
Saturday was also senior day for the Warhawks as they recognized Kaci Schonert (Racine, Wis./Horlick), Mackenzie Serbousek (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie), Lauren Otto (Richmond, Ill./Richmond Burton Community), Alyssa Lennon (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) and Payton DeLuga (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) after the match.
"These seniors have meant a lot both on and off the field. As a group they have done an excellent job this year introducing some new ideas with team building and team chemistry. We don't have team captains, but all five have picked their moments to lead and that's probably one of the biggest things they will leave on our program when they are finished," Quamme remarked of the seniors.
UW-W returns to the field tomorrow for a match in Naperville, Illinois against North Central College at 3:30 p.m.
