Warhawks Clinch Third Straight WIAC Title
The UW-Whitewater women's soccer team clinched at least a share of the 2012 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title with a 5-1 win over UW-Oshkosh Wednesday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The game, played mostly through a downpour, was heavily dominated by the Warhawks who improve to 11-4-1 overall and 6-0-0 in the WIAC. The Titans fall to 9-3-3 overall and 2-2-2 in the WIAC.
Kelsey Finn (Glendale/Nicolet) broke the scoreless tie scoring the first of her two goals on a direct free kick in the twenty fourth minute to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
Christina Tooren (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) scored a buzzer beater of sorts as she drilled one past the Titan goalkeeper to put the Warhawks up 2-0 with just four ticks left on the clock in the first half. Samantha Hoerchner (Germantown/Kettle Moraine) was credited with the assist, her second this season.
And then the rain began to fall. It rained harder and harder throughout the entire second half and both goalkeepers had to contend with some slippery situations.
Tooren pushed the Warhawks out ahead 3-0 with her second goal of the game in the 59th minute; this time unassisted.
The Titans responded less than a minute letter with their only goal of the game to make it 3-1.
In the 66th minute Jenna Woodson (Menomonee Falls/Menomonee Falls) headed a ball in the box that landed at the feet of Sarah Sedlar (Racine/Case). Sedlar punched it in for her fifth goal of the season to give UW-W a three goal cushion. Sedlar has now scored in four straight games and five of the last six.
Finn scored her second goal, third of the year, exactly two minutes later on another direct free kick about thirty yards out from the goal to make it 5-1.
The Warhawks dominated play controlling the ball in their offensive third for a majority of the game. UW-W outshot UW-O 18-3 in the first half and when conditions got slick they still managed to outshoot their visitors 12-11 in the second half.
Tooren continues to climb up in the UW-W record book. She is currently third in career points (88) and goals (36), and fifth in career assists (16).
Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) made five saves in the game and improves to 11-4-1 this season as the team's primary goalkeeper.
The WIAC title is the third in a row for UW-W, having never won one before 2010. This season marks the first for Ryan Quamme as head coach of the team after being an assistant for the past four seasons.
UW-W will look to remain unbeaten in WIAC play when they return to action October 20 when they host UW-Stevens Point at 5 pm at Fiskum Field. A win will clinch the outright title for the Warhawks.
