Warhawks Earn 3rd Straight Shutout
STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Katy Kusswurm (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) scored a late second half goal to give the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over UW-Stevens Point Saturday. UW-W, 13-3-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, will await the result of a match between UW-La Crosse and UW-Oshkosh to see where they finish the regular season in the league standings.
The first half was relatively uneventful with both teams recording only two shots each, none of which were on goal.
UW-W came out of halftime with some energy, recording a shot in the 51st minute and earning corners in the 54th and 59th minutes.
Emily Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) was the first to test the Pointer goalkeeper, putting a header on goal in the 60th minute, but Sarah Peplinski made the save.
Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) rejected a Pointer shot in the 64th minute, and on the ensuing counterattack, Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) registered a shot on goal that was stopped by Peplinski.
With less than 20 minutes to go in the match, Kusswurm buried her second goal of the season on a pass from Karina Rosales (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) to give UW-W a 1-0 advantage.
The Pointers had one more opportunity in the 79th minute, but the shot sailed wide and UW-W went on to win.
The Warhawks outshot UW-SP 6-4, incuding 3-1 on goal.
The shutout is the third in a row for UW-W and the fourth in the last five games. Yonan needed to make just one save to improve to 6-0-0 this season with five shutouts.
Based on the outcome of the match between UW-O and UW-L, the Warhawks could be playing their next game next Tuesday or Thursday. If UW-O wins or ties, the Warhawks will finish third in the regular season standings and will host a first round match on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Fiskum Field. If the Titans lose, UW-W will be in second, thus earning a first round bye and the right to host a semifinal match on Thursday at 6 p.m. Visit uwwsports.com later today for more information.
