Warhawks Fall to Chicago 1-0
The Warhawk men's soccer team, ranked sixth in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands, or feet, of the University of Chicago Sunday afternoon at Stagg Field in Chicago, Illinois.
Sunday's loss to the Maroons broke a five match UW-W win streak against Chicago. The last loss to UC dates back to a 2-1 deficit October 21, 2006.
Defense ruled the first half as neither offense could muster any momentum. The Warhawks and Maroons combined for just three shots, none of which were on goal, in the first period.
UC rattled off four shots in five minutes and twenty-six seconds, the onslaught coming just two minutes into the second period. The last of the five Maroon scoring opportunities in the spurt found the back of the Warhawk net off the foot of Kyle Kurfirst for his second goal of the season at 52:26.
Sam Kuchenreuther (Brown Deer/Brown Deer) tried to tie the match with an opportunity at 63:41 but UC goalie Elek Lane recorded the save shutting down the Whitewater offense.
Warhawk goalie Matt Mikesell (Waukesha/Kettle Moraine) posted four saves in the match but records the loss to fall to 2-3 this season. Lane picked up the win for UC in the goalie box recording his fifth shutout to move to 7-5-2 on the season.
UW-W falls to 10-7 and the Maroons are 7-6-2 overall.
Whitewater will host Finlandia University Saturday, October 29 for Homecoming and Alumni Day with a scheduled kick-off at 1:00 pm.
