Warhawks Outlast Falcons on the Road
RIVER FALLS, Wis. - Two second half goals were enough for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team to hold off a late charge by UW-River Falls on Saturday. The Warhawks topped the Falcons 2-1 to move to 9-2-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Falcons fall to 3-10-1 overall and 0-3-1 in league play.
The Falcons posed a threat early in the match, posting shots on goal in the sixth and 22nd minutes, but Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) made saves on both attempts.
Freshman forward Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) tallied the Warhawks first shot on goal in the 24th minute, but UW-RF goalie Haley Crosby made the stop.
Ten minutes later Katy Kusswurm (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) put a shot on frame, but Crosby again made the save.
Klimisch was tested one last time in the first half, but notched her third save in 45 minutes as the teams went into halftime scoreless.
The Warhawks finally got on the scoreboard in the 52nd minute when Karina Rosales (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) found Marie Lesperance (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) for her third goal of the season and a 1-0 Warhawk lead.
Three minutes later, the Warhawks were awarded a penalty kick and Emily Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) made good on the attempt for a 2-0 lead. Mouille has been successful on both of her PK attempts this season.
Karina Rosales (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) looked to push the lead to three by putting Crosby to work in the 61st, 63rd and 65th minutes with shots on goal, but Crosby made all three saves to keep the game at 2-0.
River Falls responded with some late offensive pressure. With less than thirty minutes to play, the Falcons tallied seven shots, two on goal, and one corner kick. One of their shots, in the 89th minute, resulted in a goal to halve the Warhawk lead, but UW-W held on for the final 90 seconds to win 2-1.
Klimisch totaled four saves in the match to earn the win and improve to 7-2-3 this season.
UW-W outshot their host 25-12, including 12-5 on goal, and tallied eleven corners to the Falcons' one.
The Warhawks have a quick turnaround as they will travel to Madison on Monday, October 16 to play Edgewood College in a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
