Warhawks Overpower Platteville
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team tallied their first goal in the sixth minute and never looked back as they went on to defeat UW-Platteville 8-0 in their final regular season home game on Wednesday evening. Seven of the Warhawks' eight goals were scored by freshmen as UW-W improved to 11-3-3 overall and 3-2-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Pioneers fall to 7-10 overall and 0-6 in league play.
Anna Perona (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) notched her first goal of the season, and the game, on an assist by Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) in the sixth minute.
Then the flood gates opened and UW-W added goals by Emily Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee)and Katy Kusswurm (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North), and two more by Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere), all before the 13 minute mark. Mouille's goal was unassisted, Kusswurm was aided by Perona and Boyd scored her first goal unassisted while Mouille helped on the second.
Jenel Karow (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) entered the game in the 36th minute and scored her first collegiate goal less than four minutes later to give UW-W a 6-0 lead just before the half. Karow was assisted by Lydia Jacobson (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie).
Karow stretch the Warhawk lead to seven with a goal in the 84th minute, and Giana Rogala (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine) closed the scoring with a goal in the 88th minute.
The Warhawks outshot the Pioneers 36-8 in the match, including 24-6 in shots on goal. Both marks are season highs.
Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) earned the shutout after making six saves, several in one-on-one situations.
UW-W will take a day off before returning to action to play Edgewood College on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Verona. Saturday, the Warhawks will travel to play their final regular season game against UW-Stevens Point. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
If UW-W wins Saturday and UW-Oshkosh loses to UW-La Crosse, the Warhawks will earn the number two seed in the upcoming WIAC Tournament. If UW-W wins and UW-O wins or ties, UW-O will earn the number two seed. The top two seeds in the WIAC Tournament receive first round byes.
