Warhawks Shutout Grinnell; Win 5th Straight
Coming off of a 2-1 victory over North Park last night, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team followed with a 1-0 win over Grinnell at Fiskum Field in Whitewater on Thursday. The win was the fifth in a row for the Warhawks who are now 12-4-3 this season.
The Warhawks maintained most of the possession in the first ten minutes of the match. Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) had the best opportunity for a goal in the fifth minute, but his shot was saved by the Pioneer keeper.
The chilly evening did not produce much in the way of offense as the teams entered halftime scoreless.
Jake Santellano (North Brook, Ill./Glenbrook North) nearly gave the Warhawks a 1-0 lead three minutes into the second half, but his header sailed just wide to the left of the goal.
On a counterattack in the 62nd minute, Michael Salm (Grafton, Wis./Grafton) gained possession of the ball and chipped it over the defense to Jordan Kayser (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn). Kayser touched the ball into space and knocked it past the keeper to give UW-W a one goal advantage.
Grinnell was only able to attempt three shots in the final 28 minutes and only one was on goal, but Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) made the save to earn his fourth shutout of the season.
The Warhawk defense held the Pioneers to eight shots in the match and only two were on goal.
UW-W will take a two-day break before hosting No. 22 Washington-St. Louis on Sunday. The match, tabbed as senior day, will begin at noon at Fiskum Field.
