Warhawks' Streak Snapped by Concordia
A goal by Concordia-Wisconsin less than a minute into the first overtime ended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team's eight-game winning streak Wednesday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The Warhawks, ranked fifth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll and playing their second game in as many days, lose for the first time this season and drop to 8-1. The Falcons improve 6-1-1 with the victory.
The Warhawks, uncharacteristically, gave up an early goal to the visitors. The Falcons came down the field and scored in the 9th minute for the early 1-0 lead.
Alex Whiteman (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) answered for the Warhawks in the 21st minute, corralling a pass from Derick Achombom (Bamenda, Cameroon/Government Bilingual High) and knocking it past the keeper to tie the game.
Each team managed three more shots as the half wore on, but entered halftime tied at one.
The second half was hotly contested, but neither team posed a serious threat until the final six minutes of the half. Isaac Monson (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) had a chance to give the Warhawks the lead when the goalie came off the line, but his shot was stopped by a Falcon defender before it crossed the goal line.
Fifty-two seconds into overtime, the match was over. Concordia forward Jordan Moehn snuck a shot past the Warhawk defense that ricocheted off the post and into the net for the win.
Prior to tonight's loss the Warhawks tied the school record for the best start in school history.
UW-Whitewater will return to the field on Friday when they host Augustana in a 7 pm at Fiskum Field.
