Warhawks Suffer Loss; Await NCAA Bid
It just wasn't meant to be. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team (18-3) saw their 15-game winning streak snapped on an own goal in a 1-0 loss to UW-Oshkosh in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship match Saturday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The Titans earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament and the Warhawks will await the announcement of the 64-team field on Monday at noon.
The Titans came out fast and furious, recording twelve shots in the first half, four on goal. Jordan Myers (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) did all she could to keep them out of the net making saves in the 13th, 15th, 32nd and 41st minute. UW-Whitewater recorded five shots in the first half, two on goal.
UW-Oshkosh continued their pressure in the second half. Christina Mauthe fired a shot in the 67th minute that Myers hit up off the cross bar and corralled for the save to preserve the scoreless tie. Myers made another save on a header by Robyn Elliott in the 70th minute, and another on a shot by Elliott in the 72nd minute. Rachel Elliott, Robyn's twin sister, fired another shot on Myers in the 80th minute but she again made the save.
In the 86th minute a ball caromed off of several people in the box and when a Warhawk defender went to clear it with their head, it went backwards into the goal to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. The Warhawks were unable to make a comeback and the Titans went on to win.
UW-Oshkosh went on to outshoot the Warhawks 23-8 in the match. Myers played brilliantly, as she has all season, making a season-high ten saves in the game.
The Warhawks will spend the weekend awaiting their fate to be announced at noon on Monday. UW-Whitewater coach Ryan Quamme said after the game, "We've put a great resume together and got some great wins. It's never nice to have to wait and see, but I feel strongly that we deserve to be in the tournament." The Warhawks have been to the NCAA tournament the past three seasons, earning the automatic bid the last two years and an at-large bid in 2011. The Titans are making their second appearance in the last four seasons.
