Warhawks Tie Maroons
The UW-Whitewater men's soccer team played the University of Chicago to a 2-2 tie after two overtimes Sunday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The Warhawks are now unbeaten in their last five games and their record moves to 7-4-3 overall. The University of Chicago is now 7-3-4 overall.
The Maroons tallied the first score 21 minutes into the game and held onto the 1-0 lead into halftime.
UW-W's Ty McCoy (Batavia, IL/Batavia) scored at 48:37 off of a cross from Logan Fye (Rockford, IL/Winnebago) to tie the game. The goal is the third of the season for McCoy and the assist is Fye's second of 2012.
Chicago regained the lead at 57:04 when Michael Choquette headed one past Matt Mikesell (Waukesha/Kettle Moraine) to make it 2-1.
UW-W again showed their persistence scoring another game tying goal at 72:59. This time Kyle Sundby (Verona/Verona) headed one past the Maroon goalkeeper off of a Sam Novak (Milton/Milton) throw-in. The goal is the second of Sundby's career.
The Maroons had two more chances to take the lead in regulation but Mikesell made two saves in the last eleven minutes to keep the game tied at two heading into overtime.
The first overtime was a bit slower paced compared to the rest of the game as only one shot was fired by either team. Nic Lopez of Chicago had his shot sail wide right at 95:13.
The pace quickened in the second overtime with both teams playing with a sense of urgency. Maroon forward Kyle Kurfirst put a shot on goal three minutes in but Mikesell was again there to make the save.
John Gottwald (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee) retaliated with a header fifteen seconds later off of Mikesell's punt but the Chicago goalkeeper, David Cohen, made the stop.
Chicago fired off two more shots and the Warhawks one, but neither team could break the tie as the game ended 2-2.
UW-W is 1-1-3 in overtime games this season.
Josh Rohde (Waukesha/Waukesha West) started in goal and played the first half for UW-W. He made five saves while giving up one goal before giving way to Mikesell. Mikesell played the rest of the way giving up one goal and making four saves.
UW-W will travel to Lake Forest College for their next match on October 28 at 1:30 pm. The Warhawks will return home on November 2 to wrap up the regular season with a match against conference foe UW-Oshkosh at 7:00 pm at Fiskum Field.
