Warhawks Tie School Record in Win over UW-RF
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team (8-2, 2-0 WIAC) tied a school record with five consecutive shutouts after a 2-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (4-3-2, 0-1-1) Saturday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The feat was also accomplished in both 1999 and 2012. The Warhawks have not allowed a goal for over 455 minutes.
In usual fashion, the Warhawks put pressure on their opponent early. Two shots and four corners in the first seven minutes kept the Falcons on their heels. At 9:13 Carly Pottle put the Warhawks on the board knocking a ball in off of a Marie Lesperance rebound.
The Warhawks went on to outshoot the Falcons 8-1 in the first half.
UW-River Falls came out of halftime with a bit more intensity, notching two shots and three corner kicks in the first seven minutes of the half, but the Warhawk defense remained strong.
Brianna Reid made it 2-0 after finding the goal on a tough angle from the right side at 55:37. Reid was aided on her team-leading fifth goal of the year by Jenna Woodson who notched her team-leading fourth assist.
The defense did the rest. Jordan Myers earned her 28th career shutout making two saves in the game. Myers now has 305 career saves, 51 shy of the school record.
“I thought we played well. River Falls has some good, young players and plays extremely well,” UW-Whitewater coach Ryan Quamme stated after the game. “We just ask that our women stick to the game plan no matter the situation. We were pleased to get another conference win.”
This is the 23rd consecutive WIAC regular-season win for the Warhawks. UW-Whitewater will look for 24 in their next match when they travel to UW-Platteville on October 1st for a match against the Pioneers beginning at 5 pm.
