Warhawks Top Falcons in WIAC Semis
Just five days after the two teams met the last time, the result was the same, a 2-0 victory for UW-Whitewater over UW-River Falls Thursday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. On October 27 the Warhawks took down the Falcons 2-0 to finish the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season with an unblemished 8-0-0 record. This time the Warhawks defeated the Falcons to advance to the WIAC championship game. UW-W improves to 14-4-1 while River Falls finishes the season 9-8-3.
Just like the last time they met, UW-W scored a goal in each half. This time it was Chrissy Tooren (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) doing the damage scoring both goals. Her first goal came at 8:49 off of a pass from Jessica Allemang (Wauwatosa/West). The second goal was unassisted and came at 83:07. Tooren has a team-high twelve goals this season.
Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) earned her sixth shutout of the season playing the entire game in goal for the Warhawks and making four saves. Myers, a sophomore, has eleven career shutouts and is tied for third in the UW-W record book for career shutouts.
The Warhawks possessed the ball for much of the game and outshot the visitors 22-13. The Warhawks withstood an increase in pressure by the Falcons in the second half but maintained the shutout. UW-W also earned six corner kicks to River Falls' three.
The Warhawks advance to the WIAC tournament championship game on November 3 against UW-Stevens Point at 1:00 pm at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The game is a rematch of the 2010 WIAC title game in which the Pointers took home the crown after a 1-0 win. The winner of the WIAC tournament earns the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III championship. This is Whitewater's third consecutive, and ever, appearance in the championship game, a game they have never won.
