Warhawks Unbeaten Streak to Nine
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team pushed their unbeaten streak to nine games Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over Marian University at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The Warhawks, 11-3-3, have not lost since a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime loss to Carthage on September 24.
The Sabres were outmatched from the very start. Within the first eight minutes of play the Warhawks recorded five shots and one corner. In the tenth minute Sam Kuchenreuther (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) hooked up with Sam Novak (Milton, Wis./Milton) who passed to Ty McCoy (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) who found the back of the net to give the Warhawks an early 1-0 lead.
UW-Whitewater continued to pressure the Sabre defense firing off four more shots in the next ten minutes.
Jeroham Duran fired Marian's first shot of the game in the 27th minute but Josh Rohde (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) made the save. The Sabres tested Rohde again in the 32nd minute but the senior goalkeeper again made the stop.
The Warhawks subbed the entire set of field players in the 33rd minute without a letdown in play. Michael Montanye (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) fired a shot that sailed left in the 36th minute and, later in the half, both Chris Roche (Manchester, England/Sale Grammar School) and Xander Lien (Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead) put headers on net that were saved by the Marian keeper. The Warhawks carried their 1-0 lead into halftime.
The second half started much like the game ... all UW-Whitewater. Three quality shots in the first four minutes of the second half were followed by two corners, another shot and, finally, another goal. This time Jordan Wilkins (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) punched a ball in on a corner from John Gottwald (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) in the 52nd minute. The goal is the fourth of the season for Wilkins and the assist is Gottwald's tenth.
Less than six minutes later Gottwald tallied his eleventh assist when Ryan Reid (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) headed the ball into the net to give the Warhawks a 3-0 lead.
Head Coach Tony Guinn continued to substitute players in and the Warhawks continued to pound shots on net. After the game Guinn said, "It was nice to get more of our guys in for quality minutes. It was a fun game for us."
Alex Buchman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) entered the game in the 61st minute at goalkeeper for UW-Whitewater, but was never tested. The Warhawks went on to outshoot the Sabres 29-3 in the game.
UW-Whitewater will face two of their toughest opponents in their next two games. Friday at 7 pm the Warhawks will host UW-Platteville for the second annual Shaymus Guinn Cup. "We're expecting a big crowd for Friday's game. These next to games are rivalries that go way back." UW-Whitewater will wrap-up the regular season on Sunday with a match against UW-Oshkosh at Fiskum Field at 1 pm.
