Warhawks Upend #23 Titans
Behind two second half goals by Logan Fye (Rockford, IL/Winnebago) the UW-Whitewater men's soccer team defeated twenty-third ranked Illinois Wesleyan 2-1 Wednesday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The Warhawks improve to 6-4-2 this season and hand the Titans just their second loss in twelve games.
It was clear that both teams had an offensive mindset from the start. There were eight shots by the two teams in the first fifteen minutes and the pace remained quick throughout the game.
The Titans best opportunity came in the eighth minute on a free kick about thirty yards out but Josh Rohde (Waukesha/Waukesha West) made a diving stop for the Warhawks to keep the game tied at zero.
The Warhawks had great opportunities in the ninth and tenth minutes with headers but the first was saved and the second sailed high. In the twelfth minute Logan Fye (Rockford, IL/Winnebago) had the ball about sixteen yards out with a clear path to the goal but his shot was saved as well.
The teams went back and forth over the course of the next 33 minutes trading shots, fouls, and corner kicks but headed into halftime tied at zero.
Ten minutes into the second half things got very exciting … and a little strange. Three goals were scored in one minute; two by the Warhawks and one by the Titans.
It was Logan Fye (Rockford, IL/Winnebago) who broke the scoreless tie with a goal, assisted by Ryan Reid (Rockton, IL/Hononegah), at the 54:44 mark. Just twenty seconds later Fye scored again after some nice passing by John Gottwald (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee) and Sam Novak (Milton/Milton) found Fye one-on-one with the keeper.
Forty seconds later the Titans came within one on a goal by John Pisani, assisted by Angelo Catalano.
The Titans were unable to capitalize on anymore goal scoring opportunities and the Warhawks held on to win 2-1.
Josh Rohde (Waukesha/Waukesha West) made eight saves in the game to earn his first win of the season.
The game was riddled with foul, totaling 41 in the match. The Titans were whistled for sixteen and one yellow card.
The twenty seconds between Fye's two goals is the eighth fastest in National Collegiate Athletic Association history when consecutive goals are scored by the same player. The fastest was ten seconds by Cazz Warren of Adrian on September 11, 2009.
The men have off from competition until October 18 when they travel to Ripon, Wisconsin for a match against Ripon College beginning at 3:00 pm.
