FORT WAYNE, Ind. –The Indiana Tech men’s soccer team won their season opener 2-1 over Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Wednesday night at Warrior Field.
With the win the Warriors move to 1-0 while the Cougars fell to 0-3.
It was a rather quiet first half with a total of 13 shots between the two teams, eight for the Cougars and five for the Warriors. Mount Vernon held the edge in shots on goal with a 5-2 margin, including two chances that forced Tech goalkeeper Reece Richardson (Halifax, England) to make some impressive saves to preserve the 0-0 score.
With time winding down the Warriors Padraic Ormsby (Wicklow, Ireland) took a free kick from the left side of the box that rolled under the reach of the Cougars’ keeper and with defenders ready looked to be a thwarted attempt. However, on the clearing attempt the ball was knocked off the post and bounced into the back of the net to give Tech the 1-0 lead at the half.
The Orange and Black wasted no time adding to their lead in the second half, scoring just two minutes in, as Zachary St. Aubin (Manteno, Ill.) knocked in the second of two rebounds as the third time was the charm for the Warriors.
It was 20 minutes before either team got a decent look at the goal; this time the Cougars took advantage of poor defense. The ball was being possessed in the box and a miscommunication left Brent Schilling open in front of the net for an easy goal, cutting the Warrior lead to one, 2-1.
The Cougars made a late push as the Warriors went into defensive mode with two minutes to play, but Indiana Tech held strong for the 2-1 victory.
“We had to just grind out a result, especially after Paulo [Delgadillo] left the game and we needed to drop Ormsby to play center back,” said Tech Head Coach David Bokhart. “We had some decent spells of possession after we scored the second goal, but the game was all them after the injury."
"In order to be a decent team you have to win a lot of different types of games, so we’ll put this one in the ugly and fortunate column. Let’s hope we can get everyone healthy and ready for Saturday and beyond.”
Indiana Tech will return to the pitch on Saturday, Aug. 31 at noon when the Warriors play host to the Trolls of Trinity Christian.
